The World is Invited to Be the Fourth Haim Sisters Sister.

"Do you know when you'll be interviewing the band?" a text arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There's just a key snag: The sender also desires to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Multiple celebrated supporters have openly petitioned for the honor.

It's clear something is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their path playing gigs at small eateries with their family. Now they're multiple Grammy contenders.

Similar to the greatest ensembles, they're a tight-knit trio. Their visuals repeatedly show them marching in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such pure exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members told us and said, 'After your show, I bought a guitar'," states Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "It is the greatest honour. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage others to form a group."

"And thus everyone is invited to be the honorary member of Haim."

Grammy Nod

The trio have called into home, where they're recovering after an major tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in consideration for the award.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the nomination is deeply felt by the band.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant achievement," says Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the female artists that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The project came out of a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that unique in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The words detail endings and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they are becoming.

"I adore summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to actively work on shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That developed resilience required a fresh approach – more raw and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drums.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Collective Camaraderie

The band's openness inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their personal horror stories.

Someone ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Legacy

You can clearly sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their place in the music world.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an international fan base.

But Haim will consistently be their top focus.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "There is no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
