Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a military coup in September and given more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

He said the vigil would be so followers could "pray for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the potential of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a background of organizing to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.

The former president was convicted of leading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
