An Emotional Moment as Liam Rosenior Overcomes Barriers

"He is a top coach that knows the game inside out, and that's the most important thing.

"But, as Chelsea's pioneering black player, I would be lying if I said this moment does not affect me."

These were the sentiments expressed by the former Chelsea winger, who earned his historic first appearance for Chelsea's senior side as a substitute back in the spring of 1982.

On Tuesday, Chelsea named RC Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior, aged 41, to be their new manager following the exit of manager Enzo Maresca.

The French club is within a multi-club ownership group that also controls the London club.

There have been just 12 of African or Caribbean heritage head coaches – not including individuals holding interim roles – in England's top flight since it began 34 years ago.

"What really strikes me regarding Rosenior is that he grew up and played locally, he knows the local fans," added Canoville.

"Whenever children see someone like Liam in charge of their club, a person they can identify with, who's from their ends, from a household that fights for what's right… that's powerful demonstrating that opportunities exist.

"Indeed, it is a huge moment for Chelsea, for London, for all young person with big dreams.

"But right now? We must support Rosenior, give him the necessary tools, and allow him to get on with the job."

What Exactly Does the Statistics Indicate?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit became the Blues' head coach in 1996 thereby becoming the top flight's first African heritage head coach.

A dozen years on, in 2008, Paul Ince became the pioneering English black manager in the Premier League after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' manager Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the sole additional current top flight gaffer of colour.

The scarcity of managers of colour throughout English football corresponds with an absence of diversity in the boardroom.

As per the BFP 2023 report, forty-three percent of Premier League footballers come from African or Caribbean backgrounds.

Yet, analysis from Kick It Out found just 3.2 percent of executive and leadership positions at most Premier League clubs are from ethnically diverse communities.

At first-team coaching level, according to figures from 11 clubs, the figure is two percent.

For all coaching roles – including senior roles – from the same 11 clubs, the figure is 5%.

"He has undoubtedly made history by virtue of him being announced as the Chelsea manager, and we hope to witness more such appointments," said the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"We know there is loads of talent that exists in the black and underrepresented groups... aspiring coaches desire the opportunity to show what they can do. We need to continue to striving to break those obstacles once and for all."

Furthermore, Rosenior is set to become one of only four full-time English head coaches currently in the Premier League – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – a number that trails Europe's remaining major divisions in terms of homegrown managers.

Sixteen out of twenty top-flight coaches in Serie A are Italian, 11 in La Liga are Spanish, 12 in the Bundesliga are German while Ten of the 18 in France.

Current Blues interim boss Calum McFarlane commented: "I'm sure all young English coaches from an academy background will be, to some degree no matter who you support, supporting Liam.

"It is truly inspirational for young English academy coaches to witness someone get that job with his background and we hope he will be highly successful."

His father, Leroy, Liam's father, had a career with clubs such as West London clubs, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, and his coaching stint culminating in a five-month spell in charge of the third-tier club Brentford in 2006.

Two years ago, he was awarded an MBE in that year's Honours List for his services to tackling discrimination in football and beyond.

After Liam retired from playing he followed a path in management. He began writing a column for a national newspaper, and in one piece he addressed the lack of diversity among managers. He highlighted that race does not determine ability and said opportunities should be given based on qualification.

He further expressed a point he has often stated: how significant under-representation leads to a failure to understand of players with diverse ethnic and cultural heritage.

During an interview with The Athletic FC, he explained how his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "difficult" and "passionate", but said he understood the Dutch player of Nigerian descent. The striker is expected to follow him in moving from France to West London in July.

In further newspaper articles, Rosenior also admitted he was "ashamed" to hear a staff member make a discriminatory remark. He vowed his support for the Rainbow Laces campaign and wrote a public message to Donald Trump while he was in office, condemning his "blatant" racism.

Rosenior has since made his name as a manager – initially with Hull City, then Strasbourg – and Wayne Rooney said this week he was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" after their time together with Derby.

Rosenior said goodbye at Strasbourg on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a long-term deal at Chelsea.

The Blues had the top flight's pioneering black boss with Gullit and the first black captain named Paul Elliott.
